1. Social media especially Indian Twitter accounts have been posting claims that Pakistan Army Brigader Raja Rizwan Ali Haider was hanged to death after his mercy plea was rejected.
2. Indian accounts gave a spin to this unconfirmed news by claiming that Brig (Retd) Rizwan was hanged because he was Shia whereas other espionage-accused Lt Gen (Retd) Javed Iqbal was spared execution as he was Sunni.
3. This is a dangerous and divisive narrative fanned from across the border.
4. ISPR has not mentioned about any such incident. However, open source investigation reveals that the originator of this unconfirmed news/rumour is a PTI member and resident of Gujranwala named Ahmad Sultan Mehar.

6. Ahmad is District Chairman of Punjab Youth Council and associated with Government of Punjab. He is a prominent PTI activist.
7. There is not an iota of doubt that Ahmad Sultan Mehar’s tweet has triggered an unwarranted controversy and series of fake news being exploited by Indian elements.
